One of the favorite parts of my job has to be working with college students.  I have had the privilege to teach a class at UNC and we have UNC student volunteers everyday that come to our office to help out.  As a UNC alum and part of the UNC staff, I cannot begin to tell you how the murder of Eve Marie Carson has affected my thoughts and prayers in the past few days.

This week is traditionally one of the most exciting weeks during the Spring Semester…the week before the last regular season men’s basketball game vs. Duke.  The basketball game is usually the topic of most conversations.  Students are trying to figure out which bar they will hang out on Saturday.  They are reading The Daily Tar Heel for basketball commentary.  They are making the list of which Duke fans they can call and harass.  Instead, these students have been reduced to discussing the cold-blooded murder of Eve Marie Carson, their Student Body President.

I have to admit I have tried to imagine what Eve’s parents must be feeling.  Can you imagine the pride they must have felt for their daughter?  After all, she was the Student Body President for one of the most prestigious universities in the nation.  She held a seat on the UNC Board of Trustees.  Not to mention, the bright future she held after graduation this May.

Only God knows all the details of what happened on Wednesday morning.  Only God can take a tragedy like this and use it for good.  All we can do is lift her family and friends up in prayer and remember that life is way too short.  One would only hope that Eve is in heaven but we would never know.  As a parent, you have to do everything in your power to make sure that your kids are exposed to the best of spiritual influences.  I don’t mean shove Christianity down their throat but get know your kids at the heart level.  You should be able to pick up some important clues as to what your kids need.  Always remember their eternity is at stake.  If you have a hard time remembering, think of Eve and remember that life is way short.
